Are you focusing on the right thing?
I am a 64-year-old Baby Boomer. In the world I grew up in, leaders focused on getting results. And in most cases, it didn’t matter how many people you stepped on or used up to get those results as long as you got results.
Focus is a powerful thing. It will direct actions and increase the likelihood of success. It will inform you about where to spend your time and energy. It will help you ignore distractions and stay on the course.
But what if you are focused on the wrong thing?
Gone are the days when people lined up at your front door begging for work. Employees have choices and lots of them. Employers are begging for people to come to work, and without people, you will not get results.
By 2025, 70% of the workforce will be millennials and Gen Z, born after 1980. When surveyed, 87% of millennials said growth and development opportunities were key criteria for their career. If you focus on growing and developing people, you will have no shortage of talent to make your dreams and visions come true both now and in the future. What if your organization was known as the place people go to grow and develop? Now before you type A, hard drivers write me off, rest assured I am going to help you get better results than you ever imagined possible. Results still matter!
People want to be part of something bigger than themselves. They want to have purpose and meaning. They want to grow and develop. So my encouragement would be to stop focusing on results primarily and turn your organization into a growth and development machine.
Imagine what it would be like if you had a whole team of people as passionate about your organization’s success as you are.
It all starts with growing and developing people. The bottom line is that while investing in people is the right thing to do, it is also the best way to get better results.
