Are You The Only One Who Knows What Winning Looks Like?
I frequently speak with frustrated leaders because their people aren’t doing what needs to be done to succeed. The conversation usually goes something like this, “they know what to do, but for the life of me, I just can’t get them to do it.” They won’t make the sales calls, they won’t meet deadlines, they won’t complete the project, they won’t, they won’t, they won’t.
Action follows clarity. If people are not taking reasonable and appropriate action, it is often because they are not clear. As a leader, it is critical that you recognize that your clarity is not their clarity. What winning looks like can be crystal clear in your mind, but you will continue to be frustrated unless it is clear in your team’s mind. When you see misaligned actions and behavior, you can take it to the bank that your team is not clear about what winning looks like.
With so many team members working remotely, understanding the importance of clarity now is more important than ever. If your team doesn’t fully understand what winning looks like and doesn’t have an easy way to track progress, you are in big trouble. Even if they are go-getters, they will likely be working on the wrong things and moving in the wrong direction, creating frustration for both you and them.
All this is highly solvable by clearly defining what winning looks like in everyone’s mind and then creating a visual scoreboard so that everyone, in real-time, can see if you are making progress. Don’t just tell them what winning looks like. Engage your team in this process so that they own the definition. Then together, figure out how you will measure progress towards your shared purpose.
