Is Your Vision & Mission Too Small?
Great visions and missions go way beyond just making your organization financially successful. They point to how you are going to make the world a better place. Do you regularly and effectively communicate with your employees how they’re connected to your company’s vision and mission? This piece of your company culture is the “glue” that keeps your mission and employees working toward a shared purpose in perfect harmony. If you dream big and clearly communicate your vision, your employees will rise to the expectation. Aligned action naturally follows clarity.
While all of us want to be part of something bigger than ourselves, this is particularly true of millennials who now make up the workforce’s bulk. Millennials share a common trait; they have an underlying desire to be part of something bigger than themselves. According to Forbes.com, “64% of them say it’s a priority for them to make the world a better place.”
Here are three components to build focus and alignment around your vision and mission:
- Make it big and powerful by moving from self-focus to other-focused. Great organizations make the world a better place. Their goods and services make our lives richer, fuller, and better. By and large, employees are not motivated by making big bucks for the company or pleasing the boss. They are much more motivated to work for a purpose or a cause that makes a difference.
- Show them how their work directly supports the bigger purpose. Does each position clearly tie back to that greater cause? Can they see how they are making a difference, how their role contributes to the overall mission?
- Always be talking about it. When is the last time you had a conversation with your employees about your company’s mission? Are your vision and mission a regular part of your daily conversation? Are you openly and publicly celebrating “mission accomplished” moments?
Now get out there and lead. Communicate your company’s vision and encourage your employees’ desire to be a part of something bigger.
