Presence is a Superpower
Written by Tyler Head
Presence with your people is your company’s superpower.
Let’s start by defining our terms.
Presence, according to the Oxford dictionary, is “being at a particular place at a particular time.”
But let’s take it a step further: Presence is being with another person or group, undistracted and fully engaged.
Your people doesn’t imply ownership—it points to responsibility.
If you lead a team, a department, or an entire company, then your people are those you’ve committed to serve, develop, and walk alongside. Leadership is relational.
And superpower? It’s an extraordinary ability that surpasses the norm.
In this case, presence is that extraordinary ability—especially in a distracted, fast-paced world.
So let’s return to the opening line:
Presence with your people is your company’s superpower.
All throughout history, we’ve seen what presence and focused effort can do when small groups of people fully engage. It’s not just theory—it’s tangible, proven, and powerful:
- The Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955–1956): Leaders and citizens showed up, day after day, choosing coordinated resistance and community over comfort. Their presence sparked a movement and changed the law.
- The Apollo 11 Moon Landing (1969): Thousands of engineers, scientists, and astronauts brought relentless focus to a shared vision. Their attention and collaboration made the impossible possible.
- The Rescue at Dunkirk (1940): Civilians turned up with fishing boats and ferries, risking their lives to rescue soldiers. Their presence—undistracted and resolute—turned a looming disaster into a story of resilience and unity.
These moments remind us: presence is not passive. It’s courageous. It’s costly. And it’s the first move toward extraordinary impact.
But presence doesn’t only change history—it changes people. It shows up in the quiet, unscheduled moments of leadership, if we’re paying attention.
I once sat across from a colleague at the tail end of a long day. The kind where your mind is already in tomorrow and your body’s begging to be somewhere else.
But something in me said: Be here.
So I closed my laptop, silenced my phone, and leaned in. No agenda—just attention.
At first, he hesitated. Gave a few surface-level updates. But something shifted when he realized I wasn’t going anywhere. My presence gave him permission to slow down. He started talking—really talking—about the weight he was carrying, the decisions keeping him up at night, the vision he had but didn’t know how to voice.
Here’s what I’ve come to believe:
- Presence is a gift to you, the leader. It invites clarity, insight, and a deeper sense of purpose in the moment.
- Presence is a gift to the other person. It affirms their being, their worth, their voice, and their belonging—without needing to solve or fix.
- Presence is a gift to the relationship. It creates a space where honesty lives, where trust grows, and where forward movement becomes possible.
That day, we didn’t just talk—we mapped out a new way forward. Not just for a project, but for his leadership. For his company. For the culture we hope to shape.
All because one of us chose to stay, lean in, and engage.
Presence isn’t about being everywhere at once. It’s about being here, now.
Noticing. Listening. Engaging.
It’s the quiet superpower that changes everything.
So here’s the invitation:
- Where are you showing up physically but not fully?
- Who in your organization needs more of your presence and less of your pressure?
- What might become possible if your leadership started with undistracted attention?
At Dryve, we believe presence isn’t just a soft skill—it’s a strategic one. It shapes culture, unlocks clarity, and catalyzes change.
If you’re ready to explore what the power of presence could look like in your leadership and how your team operates, we’d love to walk with you.
Let’s build something better, together.
