Cultivate A Culture Of Coaching

By Tyler Head

Just because it got you there doesn’t mean it will get “them” there.

Traditionally, it has been modeled that you have to know more to lead; you must have the correct answers should your employees call you for help. We all know that “knowledge is power,” and if you are going to stay in control, you had better have the right answers. But what if winning as a leader was not about having power over, but instead power with. The most successful leaders know that winning is about engaging their team’s heart, soul, and mind around a shared purpose, not about having the right answers. It is indeed about having power with instead of power over.

Traditionally, we have expected future leaders to start at the bottom and work through all the positions, with intentions to experience the positions and develop the knowledge to lead. In essence, to do it the way we did it. But again, Just because it got you there doesn’t mean it will get “them” there.

In today’s rapidly changing world, you need people who can think on their feet, not mindlessly comply. Coaching and developing your people is the best way to do precisely that. You need to work extra hard to engage and motivate your current employees from the bottom up, top-down, and everything between—with clear intentions to move cohesively and confidently toward a common goal. (Insert your mission statement here.)

A culture steeped in the art of coaching is the way to do that.

All in all—it’s far less about how much you know. If you are leading people in a common direction around a shared purpose, it’s much more about how you engage them. Knowing everything is exhausting, and in all honesty, not plausible. Developing the ability to engage with your employees will yield a much higher return for the organization as a whole.

Developing the ability to engage with your employees will yield a much higher return for the organization as a whole.

Even if you know the correct information, often, it’s best to leave it at home. Just because it got you there doesn’t mean it will do the same for others. Take the risk, engage, create clarity and cultivate a coaching culture from the top down.
